Real ID Deadline Looms: Travelers Urged to Act Before May 7

The clock is ticking for travelers nationwide, as the deadline to obtain a REAL ID is less than a month away—set for May 7. While the requirement has been postponed several times in the past, this time, it’s official: no REAL ID, no hassle-free domestic flights.

NBC’s Erica Byfield reports that despite the urgency, many people still haven’t made the switch. One traveler, Chicago musician Matthew Lux, admitted he hasn’t gotten one yet—and just lost his current ID. “I wasn’t worried because I have a passport,” he said. “But I’ll make sure the replacement is a REAL ID.”

The Department of Homeland Security is enforcing the policy in response to recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission. Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act strengthens ID requirements for security purposes.

At airports like LaGuardia in New York, officials are working to raise awareness and encourage people to make appointments before the deadline. “Getting your REAL ID ahead of time will make your experience more efficient,” one official said.

Acceptable alternatives to the REAL ID for air travel include a U.S. passport, a Department of Defense ID, a permanent resident card, a trusted traveler card, or—for New Yorkers—an enhanced driver’s license.

To apply, you must bring original documentation showing your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number (or exemption), and proof of name changes if applicable. While it may be difficult to secure an appointment right away, DMV officials advise people to keep checking for openings and to pre-screen documents online to speed up the process.

For now, travelers like Matthew Lux may get a temporary reprieve if they have a valid passport. But for long-term peace of mind, upgrading to a REAL ID is quickly becoming a necessity.
