California to Sue Trump Over Tariffs, Citing Overreach and Economic Harm
The state of California is preparing to file a major lawsuit against President Donald Trump, aiming to block a sweeping series of tariffs he announced as part of his proposed economic policy.
The announcement came from Governor Gavin Newsom via his official account on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote, “Donald Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally impose the largest tax hike of our lifetime with his destructive tariffs.”
The lawsuit will challenge Trump’s use of the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA), arguing that the move is both unlawful and unprecedented. According to Newsom, the tariffs amount to a “unilateral authority” that imposes what could be “the largest tax increase in modern American history.”
Newsom emphasized California's outsized stake in the matter, noting that the state is not only America’s largest manufacturing hub, but also one of its most important global trading partners. “No state will be impacted more than California,” he stated.
The lawsuit is being filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, where state officials hope to have Trump’s tariff plan declared void.
The move is expected to ignite a high-stakes legal battle with potential implications for federal trade policy, executive authority, and the economic future of manufacturing states like California.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
