Jury Selection Begins in Federal Sex Trafficking Case Against Sean “Diddy” Combs

Jury selection is now underway in the high-profile federal trial of music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who faces five federal charges including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

According to court filings, attorneys for both the prosecution and the defense are questioning potential jurors about their views on topics such as illegal drug distribution, the music industry, and sexual relationships involving multiple partners. Additional questions may touch on gun ownership, celebrity culture, and hip-hop.

The trial stems from an unsealed federal indictment that alleges Combs and his associates used their power to coerce women into sex acts, often in encounters referred to as "freak offs," dating back as far as 2008.

Former U.S. Attorney Damian Williams described the case bluntly:

“He used the embarrassing and sensitive recordings he made of the freak offs as collateral against the victims.”

Among those expected to testify is Cassie Ventura, Combs’ former girlfriend, who was seen in hotel surveillance footage from 2016 being kicked and dragged by Combs. Despite multiple defense efforts to have the footage excluded, a judge ruled it will be shown to the jury.

Combs has acknowledged the video, stating:

“My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video.”

Federal court filings also reference law enforcement raids on Combs’ homes in Los Angeles and Miami last year, where authorities allegedly found narcotics and over 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, described as “freak off supplies.”

Cameras are not allowed in the courtroom during the trial. However, the judge ruled that Combs may appear in street clothes each day rather than a prison jumpsuit.

Opening statements are scheduled for one week from today.
