Trump Talks Economy, Immigration, and Third Term Hints in Meet the Press Interview
In a wide-ranging interview with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, former President Donald Trump discussed key national issues, including the economy, immigration policy, and his controversial suggestion about seeking a third term in office.
When asked if he now owns the economy, Trump said, “I think the good parts of the Trump economy and the bad parts of the Biden economy because he's done a terrible job.” He downplayed inflation concerns, despite acknowledging that tariffs may raise prices on goods such as toys. “I don't think a beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old needs to have 30 dolls,” he said, defending his position.
As the U.S. continues to see strong job growth, Trump described the current economic moment as a “transition period,” insisting, “I think we're going to do fantastically.”
Trump also doubled down on his immigration policies, including mass deportations. When asked if every individual in the U.S.—regardless of citizenship—deserves due process as guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment, Trump responded, “We'd have to have a million or two million or three million trials.” He added, “I have brilliant lawyers that work for me and they are going to obviously follow what the Supreme Court said.”
That court has previously ruled that even undocumented immigrants are entitled to basic due process rights.
Trump further hinted at reopening and expanding the historic Alcatraz prison, stating, “Just an idea I've had. It's a symbol of law and order.”
NBC’s Garrett Haake reported on the interview and reactions to Trump’s comments.
