Same-Sex Couple Escorted from Boston Hotel After Bathroom Incident Sparks Controversy
A same-sex couple is speaking out after they say they were wrongly removed from the Liberty Hotel in Boston over the weekend, following a confrontation in the women’s restroom.
Ansley Baker says she was using a stall at the hotel with her girlfriend Liz Victor nearby when a male security guard entered and began banging on the stalls. Baker, who identifies as a woman, says the guard accused her of being a man in the women's restroom.
“One of the security guards was there telling me to get out of the bathroom, telling me I am a man in the women's bathroom. I told him I was a woman,” Baker said.
The couple claims the situation escalated when the security guard demanded their identification to verify their gender. Despite presenting their IDs, they say they were asked to leave the hotel. The Liberty Hotel responded in a statement, saying their security intervened after guests reported two adults sharing a bathroom stall and claimed the couple was removed after one of them allegedly touched a security guard.
Victor denies that claim and says the situation should have been resolved once it was clear only one person was in the stall. LGBTQ advocates, including Nina Selvaggio of Greater Boston PFLAG, say the incident highlights growing concerns about gender policing and harassment.
“Being harassed in public restrooms is a tale as old as time,” Selvaggio said, adding that anti-trans rhetoric nationwide may be contributing to these confrontations.
The hotel says it has attempted to reach the couple and is continuing its internal investigation.
