UC San Diego Launches Groundbreaking Study on DMT as Potential Cure for Depression
Researchers at UC San Diego are exploring the potential of DMT, a powerful psychedelic compound, to treat conditions like depression, addiction, chronic pain, and even stroke. The compound, which occurs naturally in small amounts in the human body, has been used for centuries by Indigenous cultures for spiritual and mental health purposes.
The university’s new study aims to scientifically test those traditional beliefs using modern technology. With a nearly $2 million donation, the research team is working to extend the effects of DMT from the typical 10 to 15 minutes to an hour or more—long enough to observe meaningful impacts on the brain.
“Conventional therapies aren’t working well for many people,” researchers explained. “We’re trying to create new solutions for these widespread mental health challenges.”
The trial will involve 20 healthy volunteers who will receive controlled doses of DMT and undergo brain scans via MRI while under its influence. Scientists hope to track real-time changes in brain activity to better understand the drug’s therapeutic potential.
While excitement is growing in what some are calling a psychedelic renaissance, the UC San Diego team stresses the importance of safety and rigor. They are proceeding cautiously to ensure the results are scientifically sound and clinically useful.
Participant recruitment for the study is expected to begin this fall.
