Man Mistakes Diamond for Candy Wrapper, Discovers 3.81-Carat Treasure at Arkansas Park
A sparkling surprise turned an ordinary family outing into a moment of viral fame. David DeCook was visiting Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park when he spotted something glimmering on the ground—what he thought was a shiny candy wrapper turned out to be a 3.81-carat diamond.
The octahedral brown diamond is the largest find at the park this year and the biggest discovered in over a year, according to park officials. DeCook, who named the gem “The Duke Diamond” after his dog, quickly had it confirmed and registered by the park.
In an unrelated but equally heartwarming moment, a Bernese Mountain Dog found himself in a tricky situation in Washington. Tacoma police responded after the dog became wedged between wet seaside rocks. When a leash failed to help, officers used a tarp to carefully lift the dog to safety. He was soon reunited with his relieved owners.
The day’s final uplifting story comes from Texas, where Army veteran Wayne Banks has become a local celebrity simply by waving to drivers from his assisted living facility’s porch. His small gesture of kindness sparked a big response: dozens of neighbors, first responders, and community members came together to surprise him with a gratitude-filled parade.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
