Protests Erupt Nationwide as Target Faces Backlash Over DEI Rollbacks

Dozens of protests have erupted at Target stores across the country today as organizers push for the company to reinstate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The demonstrations coincide with the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s death, a moment that sparked a nationwide reckoning on racial justice and inclusion.

Target, headquartered in Minneapolis—the city where Floyd died while in police custody—made a public pledge to the Black community in 2020, vowing to strengthen its DEI efforts. However, earlier this year, the retail giant scaled back its DEI programs, prompting widespread criticism.

The decision to reduce DEI initiatives sparked outrage, particularly among leaders of the Black faith community. Today’s protests were called to highlight the rollback and demand a renewed commitment from Target. “Those in authority can only do what people allow them to do,” one faith leader stated. “It’s not until America clears its throat and voices and registers its objection to what’s taking place that we’re going to see more of it take place.”

Nearly 70 churches across the nation are participating in the demonstrations, emphasizing solidarity and a unified call for justice and equity.
