Insurers Pledge to Streamline Pre-Approval Process
Getting medical care could soon get a little easier for millions of Americans. Dozens of major health insurance companies have pledged to simplify the process of prior authorization. That’s the pre-approval patients often need before getting certain treatments or medications. According to a new announcement, participating insurers will move toward a common electronic system. This change is designed to speed up decision-making and reduce paperwork. The new system will also include clearer explanations for approvals and denials. Insurers have also agreed to shrink the number of services that require pre-approval. Plus, they’ll ensure continuity of care by honoring existing authorizations for 90 days when patients switch plans. The goal is to roll out this new framework by early 2027. Insurers backing the change include UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and Kaiser Permanente. Several Blue Cross Blue Shield plans are also on board. The measures apply to commercial insurance, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid-managed care plans.
