Bear Euthanized After Series of Tahoe Attacks
Authorities in California have euthanized a female bear that was considered a serious public safety threat. The bear had a long history of breaking into homes and vehicles in the South Lake Tahoe area. In one alarming incident earlier this month, she entered a vehicle with a child still strapped into a car seat. Just last Sunday, the same bear broke into a trailer and swiped at a camper inside. The woman inside suffered cuts and bruises to her arm and had to be hospitalized. That same day, the bear also tore the door off a camper-van where teenagers were sleeping. These increasingly aggressive encounters prompted heightened concern among wildlife officials. Multiple efforts had been made to haze and relocate the bear away from populated areas. However, none of the non-lethal methods proved effective. On Monday, park rangers located and euthanized the animal. Officials say it was a difficult decision made to protect the public. The bear's behavior had escalated to the point where further risk to human life was deemed unacceptable.
