Big Bear Fireworks Show to Proceed Despite Petition to Protect Bald Eagles Sunny and Gizmo
A heated debate in Big Bear is drawing national attention just days before the city's 4th of July fireworks show. At the center of it all are two eaglets—Sunny and Gizmo—and a growing petition with more than 37,000 signatures urging the city to cancel the show to protect the young bald eagles.
The concern stems from fans who frequently watch the livestreams of Friends of Big Bear Valley, an organization that has raised alarms about the impact of fireworks on the local wildlife. The group has proposed alternatives like drone shows, but city leaders say the 4th of July celebration must go on. "They're putting them out into the air where nobody has a choice. You have to breathe it in. If you're in the valley, they're putting it out into the water. Fish die. You know, ducks scatter. Some of them have babies and they get injured as well." Sandy Steers, the Executive Director for the Friends of Big Bear Valley said. However, Travis Scott, CEO of Visit Big Bear, says the fireworks display—held annually for over 50 years—is crucial to the city’s economy. "U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services has made it clear that they don't believe there will be any harm or has been any harm caused in the past." Scott said.
Scott added that the event generates millions in revenue, and without it, local businesses would face serious financial strain.
"We just want to honestly and sincerely send our appreciation to all of those who love and follow Jackie and Shadow and Sunny and Gizmo. They have become wonderful Spokes birds for stewardship, for bald eagles, and we appreciate their concern. We hear them, however, our community has chosen to move forward." The fireworks are scheduled to launch at approximately 8:45 p.m. Friday in Big Bear.
Advocates say they won’t stop raising awareness and will continue pushing for change in the years ahead.
