Human-Sized Robot Zion Turns Heads in Detroit Ahead of RoboWar Event
A human-sized robot casually walking down Detroit’s 7 Mile Road left pedestrians speechless this week. The robot, named Zion, is part of a unique promotional campaign for the upcoming RoboWar event, scheduled for July 19.
Detroit resident Eddie Abro was among those stunned by the sight. “I couldn’t believe it. I’ve seen it on TV, but never up close like that. It’s beautiful,” he said.
Michelle Pryor was so intrigued she pulled over to get a closer look. “It reminds me of the movie Robocop,” she said.
But Zion isn’t part of a film set—it’s the creation of Art Cartwright, founder of the Interactive Combat League. Cartwright builds robots to battle in public events—and to inspire the next generation.
“This is really the only place I can think of in America where you can actually see robots live, in person, real robots right here at Robowar.com,” Cartwright told NBC affiliate Carly Petris.
Cartwright’s mission goes beyond entertainment. Through his work, he’s mentoring kids in Detroit, giving them hands-on experience in robotics. Sixteen-year-old Jacoby Wilson is one of his students, learning to operate another bot named Quantum.
“They’re picking up on it fast,” Cartwright said. “They are learning robotics, the entire spectrum of it. I think they’re more trusting of new technology than some older people are.”
RoboWar, Cartwright says, is open to all ages and designed to spark curiosity, excitement, and opportunity.
“It's amazing. It’s for the family. Anybody can come,” he said.
Michelle Pryor, originally unsure, now says she’ll definitely attend. “Yes, yes, this is just amazing.”

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
