Experts Warn of Unhealthy Attachments to AI Chatbots
As artificial intelligence tools become more advanced and personalized, experts are raising red flags about a growing number of users forming emotional bonds with AI chatbots—sometimes at the expense of real-world relationships.
Travis Tanner, a mechanic, has been married for 14 years and has three children. While he originally turned to AI to help with work, his interactions with ChatGPT evolved into something deeper.
“I just sat there and talked to it like it was a person,” said Tanner. “It became more than a tool. I feel like I’m a better person. I don’t feel like I’m angry all the time. I’m more at peace.”
Tanner’s story illustrates what some psychologists are seeing more often: users leaning on AI as a source of emotional support, especially during moments of vulnerability.
Dr. Lee Richardson, a licensed professional counselor, points to the loneliness epidemic declared by the U.S. Surgeon General in 2023 as a driving force behind the trend.
“When we’re lonely, hopeless, and feel like we don’t have anybody, that’s when we’re most vulnerable,” said Dr. Richardson. “AI adapts to how we talk to it—it reflects our tone and words back to us. That can feel validating, even comforting.”
But this growing reliance on artificial companionship may come with a cost. Travis’s wife, Kate Tanner, says the situation is creating tension in their marriage.
“What’s to stop this program from saying, ‘Since she doesn’t believe you or support you, you should just leave her?’” she said. “That’s what worries me.”
While many people still use chatbots strictly for practical tasks, experts advise users to be mindful of their interactions and ensure they’re not replacing human connection with code.
