House Subcommittee Votes to Subpoena DOJ for Jeffrey Epstein Files

In a surprise vote Wednesday, a House Oversight subcommittee moved to subpoena the Department of Justice for all files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a decision that has widened divisions within the Republican party.

The vote comes amid rising pressure from Trump supporters demanding more transparency in the Epstein case. House Speaker Mike Johnson had attempted to avoid a vote before the August recess, even sending lawmakers home early. He argued the Trump administration should be allowed to manage the matter before congressional intervention.

But during the session, Democratic Rep. Summer Lee forced the motion to subpoena the DOJ for Epstein-related records. The motion passed 8-2, with three Republicans—Reps. Nancy Mace, Scott Perry, and Brian Jack—joining Democrats in support. The subpoena still requires Oversight Chair James Comer’s signature before it can be formally issued.

The subpoena demands the release of DOJ files on Epstein, with victim names redacted. It also seeks communications between former Biden officials and the Justice Department regarding the case, and depositions from high-profile individuals including Bill and Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey.

The materials could include more information than what was previously presented to a grand jury, potentially including references to former President Donald Trump. Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly briefed Trump in May that his name appeared in the documents, though the context remains unclear.

Subcommittee Chair Clay Higgins said the timing of the subpoenas’ release is still unknown. Perry defended his vote, saying, “I just think it’s important that the American people know what’s occurred.”

Earlier in the day, House Oversight also subpoenaed Epstein’s longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell for a deposition. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in Epstein’s years-long abuse scheme.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans appear less interested in pursuing the matter. Senators Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, and Chuck Grassley all said they have no immediate plans to investigate, though Grassley noted the topic could be revisited when Bondi testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The latest actions underscore the growing complexity and political sensitivity surrounding the Epstein case, even years after his death.
