Beloved Dog April Passes Away After Complications From Tick-Borne Illness

There is a sad update to a story that moved many in the Coachella Valley. Last week, residents learned about April, a dog who was struck by a car and suffered two broken legs. Thanks to Animal Samaritans and donations through the Kate L. Morrow Dog and Cat Fund, there was hope she could receive life-saving surgery.

However, just before the procedure, tests revealed that April was suffering from a severe platelet disorder that was quickly worsening. Further examinations identified the cause as anaplasma, a tick-borne infectious disease.

Veterinarians said April began having trouble breathing and developed a cough, raising fears that she was experiencing bleeding into her lungs. These complications made it impossible to safely perform surgery.

To prevent further suffering, the medical team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize April. Her final day was spent surrounded by care and compassion.

Animal Samaritans is reaching out to those who donated to help April. Supporters can request a refund, or they may choose to have their donations continue to support the Kate L. Morrow Fund, which has already provided critical care to four other animals in crisis.

Anyone with questions about their contribution can contact Animal Samaritans directly.
