Earth Spinning Faster: August 5th Slightly Shorter Than 24 Hours
Earth is picking up the pace—literally.
Scientists say today, August 5th, 2025, is expected to last slightly less than 24 hours. How much less? Just over a millisecond. While that difference is far too small to notice in everyday life, experts say it's part of a growing trend: the Earth is spinning faster.
Several factors contribute to this acceleration, including subtle shifts in the Earth's core and atmospheric changes. These forces may seem minor, but they can cause measurable changes in the planet’s rotation speed.
This isn’t the first time it’s happened. The shortest day of the year so far was July 10th, and the shortest day on record occurred on July 5th of last year—clocking in at 1.66 milliseconds shorter than a full 24 hours.
Although these tiny discrepancies may seem insignificant, they can eventually affect systems that rely on precise timekeeping—like satellites, GPS, telecommunications, and high-speed financial networks.
For now, you won’t notice the milliseconds slipping away, but scientists are keeping a close eye on Earth’s changing rhythm.
