U.S. and China Agree to 90-Day Pause on Tariff Hikes Ahead of Deadline

A White House official says the United States and China have reached an agreement to pause planned tariff increases on each other’s goods for another 90 days.

The announcement came just hours before a midnight deadline when U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods were scheduled to rise sharply from 30% to 64%. While the new agreement halts the hike, details of China’s response remain unclear. Currently, American goods face a minimum tariff of 10% in China, but Beijing had not specified the new rates it would impose if the talks failed.

The 90-day pause is being seen as a temporary cooling-off period in the long-running trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies. It gives both sides more time to negotiate terms and potentially avoid further escalation that could disrupt global markets.

Tariffs between the U.S. and China have been a key sticking point in bilateral relations, impacting everything from agricultural exports to technology imports. The latest truce may relieve some pressure on businesses and consumers, but uncertainty remains over whether a long-term resolution can be reached.
