Governor Gavin Newsom Pushes Election Rigging Response Act, Sparking Fierce Political Battle

Governor Gavin Newsom has launched the campaign for the Election Rigging Response Act, a proposed ballot measure designed to counter what he and Democratic leaders call “partisan power grabs” by Republicans in other states. The announcement follows recent redistricting efforts in Texas that Democrats describe as extreme gerrymandering intended to benefit the GOP.

“This is an emergency for our democracy,” Newsom said. “By trying to rig free and fair elections through this unprecedented gerrymandering, Trump is working to silence tens of millions of Americans. This measure is in direct response to this blatant power grab and his lawlessness.”

The initiative would temporarily alter California’s redistricting process, but only if states like Texas move first with partisan map changes. Provisions include ensuring fair midterm elections in 2026, reaffirming the state’s commitment to independent redistricting, and allowing voters to approve emergency congressional maps. The measure would be temporary, with California’s current redistricting commission resuming full authority after the 2030 census.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced support, saying the plan was necessary to protect fair elections nationwide. “Donald Trump cannot defend his extreme record… That is why Republicans are trying to cheat in Texas and in other red states,” Jeffries said.

Republicans in Riverside County responded sharply. Chairwoman Lori Stone called the proposal “nothing short of un-American,” accusing Newsom of attempting to “erase entire communities from the map” to serve his political ambitions. “This is political corruption in plain sight… Every voter in California should be outraged,” Stone said.
