Florida Orders Cities to Remove Rainbow Crosswalks or Risk Losing Funding
Florida cities have received formal notice from the state’s transportation department to remove rainbow-painted crosswalks or risk losing state and federal funding.
The directive specifically targets noncompliant surface pavement art tied to social, political, or ideological messages that do not serve a traffic control purpose. According to the state, such markings can lead to distractions or misunderstandings that jeopardize both driver and pedestrian safety.
Communities across Florida have until early next week to comply with the order. Cities that fail to remove rainbow crosswalks and other decorative pavement art could see major funding withheld.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed the issue today, saying, “It’s very clear. I think everybody knows kind of where we’re at with this, and we’re just going to abide by the law.”
Critics argue the order is the latest move targeting the LGBTQ+ community by DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature. Advocates say rainbow crosswalks are not only symbols of inclusivity but also tools that help foster safer, more welcoming communities.
As the deadline nears, cities across the state are weighing compliance against pushback from residents who view the directive as discriminatory.
