Wildfire Destroys Homes in Historic Chinese Camp, Evacuations Ordered
A lightning-sparked wildfire has devastated the historic town of Chinese Camp in Tuolumne County, destroying multiple homes and forcing evacuations as firefighters battle flames across the region.
The fire began Tuesday morning and quickly spread through neighborhoods. By late afternoon, plumes of black smoke filled the sky as flames consumed homes, cars, power poles, and properties. Thick smoke made it difficult to see aerial retardant drops, while wind-driven embers carried the fire to new areas.
Reporter Peyton Headley witnessed the destruction firsthand along Red Hill Road, where several homes were reduced to rubble. The fire also spread along Highway 120 toward Sims Road, igniting additional houses. Propane tanks on one property exploded, sending flames shooting into the air. By evening, more homes had been lost, with fires continuing to burn as the sun set.
Jamie Williams of Cal Fire called it a difficult day for firefighters, noting that this blaze is just one of more than a dozen currently burning in the region. “Our priority is life and then property and then protecting the resources. So we do our best to get people out of the way, get them safe,” Williams said.
Evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for parts of Tuolumne County as crews work overnight to contain the flames and protect residents.
