Obama Condemns Violence, Offers Prayers to Charlie Kirk’s Family After Utah Shooting
Former President Barack Obama released a statement Tuesday night following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University.
In a post on X, Obama said, “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.”
Kirk, 31, was the co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of President Donald Trump. He was attending the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour” in Orem, Utah, when he was fatally shot while taking questions from the audience. The incident sent shockwaves through political circles across the country.
Obama’s remarks come as leaders from both parties condemn the violence and express condolences to Kirk’s family. The Illinois native was married to Erika Frantzve, with whom he shared two young children.
The shooting is under investigation, with officials saying they are still working to determine the motive.
