Dave & Buster’s CEO outlines company struggles and new turnaround plan
Dave & Buster’s new CEO Tarun Lal is pulling no punches about the challenges facing the company and what he plans to do about them.
Lal, who took over leadership in July, told Wall Street analysts Monday that profit growth is shrinking, sales have stalled, and shares are tumbling — with the stock down 17% on Tuesday.
In a candid presentation, Lal listed several missteps by previous leadership. He said the chain relied too heavily on appetizers, which encouraged sharing instead of individual purchases. It also stopped buying new arcade games, giving customers fewer reasons to return. Staff training was lacking, communication between corporate leaders and employees had broken down, and remodeling efforts largely failed. On top of that, Dave & Buster’s halted television advertising while rolling out too many promotions, which confused customers and cut into profits.
“We’re not waiting to make changes and implement our refocused strategy,” Lal said. “We are making changes and implementing them real-time.”
Since taking charge, Lal has reintroduced television ads, streamlined promotions, and pushed higher-margin entrées over appetizers. The company launched 10 new games across its locations, began retraining employees, and improved communication channels. Lal said remodeled stores are now significantly outperforming older ones, and food and beverage sales have turned “solidly” positive.
Still, he admitted that overall sales continue to decline this quarter, a trend that has plagued the chain for years. Past management’s growth strategies failed, but Lal believes a simplified, phased approach can make a difference.
He also acknowledged that inflation remains a threat, but said the company’s focus on value and trust with customers will be central to its rebound. “It’s not how much you’re paying; it’s about the value that you’re actually receiving from the brand,” Lal said.

UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
