House Committee Blocks Subpoena for Banking Records in Epstein Investigation
The Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee voted 20-19 on Wednesday to table a Democratic request for subpoenas targeting the chief executives of four major banks in connection with Jeffrey Epstein-related financial records.
The motion, introduced by Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the committee's ranking Democrat, sought to compel testimony from the CEOs of JPMorgan Chase, Bank of New York Mellon, Bank of America, and Deutsche Bank regarding their institutions' handling of accounts linked to the deceased financier and convicted sex trafficker.
According to Raskin, the four banks have internally flagged approximately $1.5 billion in suspicious transactions connected to Epstein's sex trafficking operations and those of his associates. Such flagged transactions typically indicate potential money laundering or other illicit financial activity that banks are required to report to federal authorities.
The close vote reflects the committee's partisan divide on the investigation. JPMorgan Chase has publicly stated its willingness to cooperate with any Epstein-related congressional subpoenas, though the bank has faced separate civil litigation over its business relationship with Epstein.
Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His financial network and the institutions that facilitated his transactions have remained subjects of ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny.
The tabled motion means the subpoenas will not proceed unless the committee revisits the issue in a future session.
