Deadly Mudslides Hit Southern California as Tropical Storms Threaten Both Coasts

Heavy rains triggered deadly mudslides and flash floods across Southern California on Thursday, leaving destruction in their wake and claiming the life of a two-year-old boy.

The storms, fueled by remnants of a Pacific tropical storm, unleashed torrents of mud and water across San Bernardino County. In Forest Falls, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, nearly two inches of rain fell in just one hour—an area that normally receives less than half an inch during the entire month of September.

The fast-moving floodwaters destroyed multiple homes, buried cars under debris, and swept away a family’s vehicle, killing a young child. Residents described harrowing escapes, with one survivor recalling how he was pinned against a door by rushing debris as mud poured through his window.

“It was one of the hardest-hit areas,” said Ian Johnson of Forest Falls, who returned with his wife the next day to salvage what they could. “I’m probably most thankful because my kids weren’t here.”

Forecasters warn more rain is possible Sunday as additional storm remnants move inland.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, Tropical Storm Gabriel continues to strengthen in the Atlantic. While it is not expected to make landfall, the National Hurricane Center predicts it could become a hurricane by Sunday, bringing dangerous surf and rip currents along the shoreline.

As both coasts brace for extreme weather, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepare for potential hazards in the days ahead.
