NASA Welcomes 10 New Astronaut Candidates for 2025 Class at Johnson Space Center

In a major step toward the future of space exploration, NASA welcomed 10 new astronaut candidates today at a formal event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The announcement marks the beginning of a two-year training journey for the select group, who were chosen from a pool of more than 8,000 applicants across the country.

These future astronauts will undergo rigorous training in areas like spacewalking, robotics, spacecraft systems, and Russian language proficiency, preparing them for potential flight assignments in upcoming NASA missions.

The announcement comes as NASA continues to push forward with its Artemis program. The next mission, Artemis 2, is slated to send astronauts around the Moon, followed by Artemis 3, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972.

"The ultimate goal," NASA has reiterated, "is to land astronauts on Mars in the coming years."

Since the agency’s founding, NASA has now selected a total of 370 astronaut candidates, beginning with the original Mercury 7 in 1959.

The newly announced class is part of a growing team that will help shape the next era of human spaceflight—expanding human presence beyond Earth and preparing for missions deeper into the solar system.
