Parents React to Trump Administration's Autism Warning About Tylenol Use During Pregnancy
Canadian parents of children with autism are expressing strong reactions following the Trump administration's Monday announcement warning doctors about what it claims is "a very increased risk of autism" linked to pregnant women's use of acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol.
Christina Collura, whose three-year-old son Luca is on the autism spectrum, shared her concerns about the stigma this could create for mothers. Meanwhile, Alina Cameron, president of the Ontario Autism Coalition and an epidemiologist, questioned the administration's approach.
What does the medical evidence actually show? A recent study in the American Medical Association Journal JAMA examined nearly 2.5 million children in Sweden and found no association between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and children's risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.
Medical experts, including cardiologist Dr. Christopher Labos, maintain that Tylenol remains the safest pain relief option for pregnant women compared to alternatives like Advil or ibuprofen.
Tylenol manufacturer Kenvue responded, stating that over a decade of research has not found credible evidence linking acetaminophen to autism. The company emphasized that without this medication, women might choose riskier alternatives or leave potentially harmful conditions like fevers untreated.
