Trump says he’s sending troops to Portland to protect ICE facilities
President Trump said Saturday he is directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “provide all necessary troops” to Portland, Oregon, to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities he described as “under siege,” and added he was “authorizing Full Force, if necessary.”
Trump’s post said the move was at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem; the White House did not immediately clarify which troops would be sent or what “full force” would mean in practice.
The announcement follows a spike in national attention to attacks and threats against federal immigration facilities, including a recent sniper-style shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas that left at least one detainee dead and others wounded — an incident investigators say appeared to target ICE operations.
Local leaders in Portland pushed back, saying the city did not request a military deployment and warning that an expanded federal presence risks inflaming protests rather than calming them. Portland officials have also raised legal and permit issues around ICE operations inside the city.
News outlets reporting on the announcement noted the move is part of a broader pattern of the administration directing federal law enforcement or military resources to U.S. cities amid tensions over protests and public-safety claims; some legal experts and civil-liberties advocates argue such deployments raise constitutional and jurisdictional questions.
