Trump to Attend Gathering of Senior Military Officials in Virginia
President Donald Trump is expected to attend a surprise gathering of senior U.S. military officials in Virginia this week, adding new significance to an event originally planned by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Sources familiar with the planning told CNN the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, was intended for Hegseth to outline his vision for transforming the Department of Defense into what he has called the “Department of War.” His remarks are expected to emphasize the “warrior ethos” and introduce new readiness, fitness, and grooming standards for military personnel.
Initially, Trump appeared unfamiliar with the event when asked last week, suggesting it might be a showcase of new weaponry. However, officials now confirm the president plans to attend in person. The gathering comes just days after Trump ordered U.S. forces into Portland to protect immigration officers and amid his heightened use of the military in addressing domestic security.
While no major national security announcement is expected, the event is being framed as a show of force highlighting what officials describe as the new look of the military under Trump’s leadership.
Some officials have expressed concerns over the costs of bringing hundreds of generals, admirals, and aides to Virginia on short notice, estimating millions of dollars in travel expenses. These concerns were heightened when it was revealed Hegseth’s remarks would also be live streamed.
Still, the gathering is expected to carry the atmosphere of a rally, underlining the administration’s commitment to reinforcing military strength and identity.
