Education Department Prepares for Government Shutdown with Mass Furloughs
The U.S. Department of Education is bracing for the potential fallout of a government shutdown, releasing its contingency plan on Sunday. If lawmakers fail to pass a spending bill by late Tuesday, nearly 1,500 of the agency’s 1,700 employees would be furloughed.
That number includes most of the staff at the Office of Federal Student Aid. While a small group of essential employees would remain on duty to ensure existing loans and grants continue to move forward, the department would suspend issuing new grants and put a hold on reviewing civil rights complaints.
The plan also outlines what would happen if the shutdown stretches beyond a week. In that case, the agency says it would need to recall some workers on a partial or rotating basis to keep operations minimally functional.
The announcement highlights the wide-ranging impact of a potential shutdown, with students, educators, and families facing uncertainty over federal support.
