Study Finds Musk’s X Is a ‘Go-To Platform’ for Antisemitism
Elon Musk’s social media platform X has become the “go-to platform for antisemitic posters,” according to a year-long study released by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.
The research, shared exclusively with CNN, found more than 679,000 posts containing antisemitic remarks between February 2024 and January 2025. Collectively, those posts were viewed nearly 193 million times. The study identified that 59% of posts pushed conspiracy theories about Jewish people — such as claims of controlling governments or denying the Holocaust — while the other 41% contained abusive attacks and dehumanization.
Despite X’s policies banning hate speech, the study found enforcement to be weak. Out of the 300 most-viewed antisemitic posts, the platform or its users took action on only 36. Crowd-sourced “community notes” were applied to just over 1% of posts, often too late to make an impact.
Researchers also highlighted the role of so-called “antisemitic influencers.” Ten accounts generated nearly a third of the antisemitic content studied. Many of these accounts were verified X Premium subscribers, allowing them not only to reach more users but also to earn money through subscriptions.
CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed said Musk has allowed hate speech to be tolerated and monetized. “He’s turned X into a hellscape fantasy,” Ahmed said. Amy Spitalnick of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs added that “antisemitic conspiracy theories and hate that were once fringe have been wholly normalized — thriving in plain sight.”
Musk has defended his approach, arguing that offensive ideas are better confronted in the open. Last year, he reinstated accounts of figures such as white supremacist Nick Fuentes, saying, “It is better to have anti whatever out in the open to be rebutted than grow simmering in the darkness.”
X previously sued CCDH in 2023 over its research, but a federal judge dismissed the case in March 2024, criticizing it as punitive.
As the debate continues, the study raises renewed concerns about how X balances free speech with the spread of hate speech on its platform.
