Trump Sends National Guard to Portland, Sparking Backlash From Local Leaders

Most Portland residents embrace the city’s “weird” reputation, but President Donald Trump has painted a darker picture — describing Portland as a city under siege. Last week, he called it “anarchy” and announced the federalization of 200 Oregon National Guard members for 60 days.

The White House framed the move as an effort to “crush violent radical left terrorism.” In a statement, officials claimed Portland has been scarred by “premeditated anarchy” near the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Local leaders strongly dispute that characterization. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said, “There is no insurrection. There is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city.” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson added, “The number of necessary troops is zero.” The state and city have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to block the Guard deployment.

Protests outside the ICE building peaked in June when police declared a riot after fires were set nearby. Since then, the area has been calmer, though the building remains fortified with fencing and graffiti. Neighbors describe occasional noise and tear gas, but not the lawless chaos the president suggests.

This is not Trump’s first intervention in Portland. In 2020, more than 700 federal officers were deployed during protests that followed George Floyd’s murder. Those demonstrations lasted over 100 days and still shape Trump’s rhetoric about the city today.

Oregon leaders warn that sending federal forces could escalate tensions rather than ease them. “President Trump has one goal. His goal is to make Portland look like what he’s been describing it as. Let’s not grant him that wish,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley.

Still, at least one Oregon Republican — Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer — praised Trump’s action, arguing it will protect ICE facilities and restore order.

As Portland awaits a judge’s decision on whether the deployment will be blocked, residents remain divided. Some fear the troops will worsen the conflict, while others are frustrated with ongoing disruptions near the ICE building.

Camden, Arkansas, is the unlikely hub of US missile manufacturing after years of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have drained the country's arsenal. But the Trump administration's push to scale up defense production is colliding with the limits of the small, rural town.
