Federal Government Shuts Down as Lawmakers Remain Deadlocked
The federal government officially shut down this morning after Senate funding votes failed Tuesday night, leaving more than two million federal workers without paychecks and sparking an intense blame game between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. Democrats are demanding healthcare protections and Obamacare subsidy extensions before agreeing to funding, while Republicans insist those discussions should wait.
What continues: Social Security, Medicare, and VA benefits will keep flowing, along with student loan processing.
What's impacted: Up to 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed, national parks may close, and TSA agents will work without pay—potentially affecting airport security and wait times.
President Trump has reiterated threats of mass layoffs as the shutdown continues. Watch the full video above to hear directly from Senate leaders, federal workers, and get complete details on how this shutdown affects you.
LOCAL IMPACT: California residents can expect Social Security benefits to continue, though customer service may be delayed. Air travel could see disruptions as TSA and air traffic control workers continue without pay.
