Day 20 of Government Shutdown: Nationwide Delays and Growing Fallout
The federal government shutdown has now stretched into its 20th day, ranking among the longest in U.S. history, with ripple effects spreading nationwide and no resolution in sight.
NBC’s Chief Capitol Hill Correspondent Ryan Nobles reports that air travel has been hit particularly hard, as air traffic controller shortages lead to widespread delays from coast to coast — affecting airports in Newark, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas.
Air traffic controllers are classified as essential employees, meaning they must continue working without pay. Secretary Sean Duffy says many are putting in six-day workweeks and logging more than 50 hours, calling the situation “frustrating” and “unfair.”
While essential workers remain on the job, thousands of other federal employees have been placed on unpaid leave. Among them are those overseeing the nation’s nuclear stockpile. The Energy Department says about 1,400 staff members have been furloughed, leaving fewer than 400 on duty to secure the nation’s arsenal.
Meanwhile, in Washington, the political standoff continues. Democrats are demanding that President Trump engage directly in negotiations, with some tying their support to extending subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. The president and Republican lawmakers remain opposed, arguing such measures would “destroy health care.”
As both sides dig in, the House of Representatives remains out of session. With critical services disrupted and workers unpaid, pressure continues to mount on lawmakers to end the shutdown and restore government operations.

Caltrans crews are working on a $4.2 million emergency repair project near North Shore after flooding and washouts damaged the roadway along the Salton Sea.
