Trump Weighs Military Options on Venezuela Amid Calls for Diplomacy
President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on whether to launch military action against Venezuela, according to a White House official and a senior U.S. official. Despite a growing American military presence in the region, Trump is reportedly holding out hope that increasing pressure alone could push Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down without direct conflict.
Sources tell CNN that Trump received multiple briefings last week outlining a range of options — from limited airstrikes and special operations raids to more extensive assaults on government or military facilities. The president also maintains the option of not acting at all.
While Trump has expressed some hesitation about the risks of a ground invasion and its potential impact on U.S. troops, officials say he is still evaluating how to balance military preparedness with diplomatic pressure.
The administration recently suspended direct communication with Maduro after efforts to broker a voluntary transition of power stalled. It remains unclear if new signals from Caracas might reopen a diplomatic path.
Trump’s deliberations come amid growing criticism from allies who believe his attention should shift back toward domestic issues.
