DHS Shutdown Continues as Trump Rejects Funding Proposal Tied to Immigration Debate
The Department of Homeland Security shutdown is set to continue after a proposed compromise to partially fund the agency was rejected, prolonging a political standoff in Washington.
According to sources, lawmakers presented a plan that would fund most DHS operations while excluding Immigration and Customs Enforcement enforcement activities. However, President Donald Trump declined the proposal, instead calling for passage of the SAVE America Act — a federal elections bill — before agreeing to any deal.
The decision highlights ongoing tensions between Republicans and Democrats as negotiations remain stalled over immigration enforcement policies. Democrats have indicated willingness to fund DHS operations broadly, but have pushed back against continued funding for certain ICE activities.
Meanwhile, some Republicans have begun to signal concern over the prolonged shutdown, particularly as airport security lines grow longer due to staffing shortages. Lawmakers on both sides have acknowledged slow progress in negotiations, with no clear resolution in sight.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has also suggested tying DHS funding to the elections bill is not a realistic path forward, noting a lack of sufficient support in Congress to pass the measure.
Democrats argue the elections legislation is unrelated to funding the agency and accuse the White House of complicating negotiations. Talks have slowed further as officials wait for confirmation of a new Homeland Security secretary before continuing discussions.
With key issues unresolved and both sides holding firm, the shutdown’s impact is expected to continue affecting security operations and travelers across the country.
