Newsom Regrets “Apartheid” Comment on Israel, Clarifies Remarks in New Interview
California Governor Gavin Newsom says he regrets using the term “apartheid” to describe Israel, clarifying his earlier remarks in a new interview.
Newsom initially made the comment during a recent podcast appearance while discussing international criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. In a follow-up interview, he said he regretted using the term in that context, explaining it was meant to reflect concerns about a possible future direction rather than the current situation.
The governor pointed to commentary from others who have raised concerns about what could happen if Israeli leadership pursues further territorial expansion, particularly in the West Bank. He said that scenario could lead to stronger language being used by critics.
Newsom also reaffirmed his support for Israel, while expressing opposition to the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and policies he says move away from a two-state solution.
The remarks come amid ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party over U.S. policy toward Israel and the broader conflict with Palestinians. Israel has strongly rejected comparisons to apartheid.
Newsom’s comments are drawing attention nationally as he remains a prominent political figure and a potential contender in future presidential elections.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
