Western New Yorkers donate over $16K in gift cards to unpaid TSA agents during shutdown
A wave of generosity is making a difference for TSA agents in Western New York, as community members step up to support workers going without pay during the ongoing government shutdown.
At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, dozens of residents donated more than $16,000 in gift cards in just one day to help Transportation Security Administration employees who have been working for more than five weeks without a paycheck.
The airport issued a call for support, and the response was immediate. By early Tuesday morning, people were already lining up to drop off gift cards for essentials like groceries and meals from stores and restaurants including McDonald’s, Aldi, and Tops.
Volunteers—many of whom typically bring therapy dogs to the airport—helped collect donations throughout the day. They described the outpouring of support as overwhelming and uplifting.
Despite the lack of pay, TSA agents at the airport continue to report for duty, helping maintain airport operations without the long delays seen at some other locations across the country.
Community members say the donations are a way to show appreciation and provide relief during a difficult time, highlighting how local support can step in when federal workers are left in limbo.
As the shutdown continues, the effort stands as a reminder of the impact everyday people can have—coming together to support those who keep essential services running.
