Located off Iran’s coast, Kharg Island handles roughly 90% of the country’s crude oil exports, making it a strategic target in any potential military operation. Its infrastructure is designed to accommodate large oil tankers, and experts say disrupting operations there could significantly impact Iran’s ability to generate revenue.
Recent US military movements in the region—including amphibious warships and Marine Expeditionary Units—have fueled speculation that Washington could attempt to seize the island. Even if successful, some analysts question whether capturing Kharg Island would achieve broader strategic goals. While it could disrupt Iran’s oil exports, it may not be enough to force Tehran to reopen critical shipping lanes or change its position in the conflict.
Regional allies are also urging caution, warning that a ground assault could escalate the war further and trigger retaliation across the Middle East.
