Macron Responds After Trump Mocks His Marriage Amid Rising Tensions Over Iran
French President Emmanuel Macron is responding after President Donald Trump made personal remarks about his marriage, adding a new layer of tension to an already strained relationship between the two leaders.
Trump criticized Macron during a private event, mocking his relationship with his wife while also taking aim at France’s decision not to join the U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran.
Speaking during a visit to South Korea, Macron called the comments inappropriate, saying they were “not elegant” and fell short of expected diplomatic standards.
The exchange comes as divisions grow between the United States and several European allies over the ongoing conflict in Iran. While France has provided some military support in the region, it has declined to fully back U.S. military operations, including refusing to allow the use of its airbases for strikes.
The disagreement reflects broader tensions over strategy and involvement, with countries like Spain and Italy also limiting their participation.
The personal remarks have drawn criticism in France, where political leaders across the spectrum condemned the comments, saying they detract from serious global issues.
Despite a previously friendly relationship, recent months have seen increasing friction between the two leaders, both on policy and in public exchanges.
