High Gas Prices Push California Travelers to Trains as Cheaper Alternative
As gas prices in California hover near $6 a gallon, many travelers are looking for more affordable ways to get around — and train travel is seeing a boost.
In the Central Valley, the Amtrak San Joaquins line, recently rebranded as the “Gold Runner,” is gaining attention as a cost-effective alternative to driving. The route connects several major cities, including Modesto, Merced, and Fresno, with service running between Sacramento and Bakersfield.
Transportation officials say the savings can be significant. Using federal mileage estimates, a one-way drive between Sacramento and Bakersfield can cost more than $200 when factoring in fuel and other expenses. A train ticket for the same trip typically costs around $50.
Officials say they are already seeing an increase in ridership, with more passengers choosing rail travel over driving as fuel prices remain high.
The train service offers multiple stops throughout the Central Valley and connections to other parts of the state, making it a practical option for both commuters and leisure travelers.
In addition to lower costs, riders can avoid traffic and parking hassles, making the train an appealing alternative.
Officials say ticket prices are expected to remain stable, with promotions and discounts available on some routes to help attract even more riders.
As fuel costs continue to climb, experts say alternative transportation options like rail could become increasingly popular across California.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him.
