Trump proposes two-week ceasefire with Iran tied to Strait of Hormuz reopening
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is willing to scale back threats of expanded military action against Iran—if the country agrees to specific conditions.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump proposed a two-week ceasefire agreement that would hinge on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
Trump said Iran could agree “to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that in return, he would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is vital to global energy markets, with a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passing through it daily.
The proposal signals a potential de-escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran, though it remains unclear how Iranian officials will respond or whether negotiations are underway.
