Federal Judge Blocks Pentagon Policy Limiting Press Access in Sharp Rebuke

A federal judge has blocked the Pentagon’s latest attempt to limit press access, issuing a sharply worded ruling that raises serious concerns about free speech and government transparency.

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman criticized the Department of Defense, saying the policy was an attempt to bypass an earlier court decision that had already struck down parts of a restrictive media access rule.

In his ruling, Friedman warned that limiting journalists’ ability to report freely poses a threat to First Amendment rights, stating that suppressing political speech is a hallmark of autocratic systems, not democratic ones.

The disputed policy would have restricted journalists’ movements inside the Pentagon, including closing a long-standing press workspace and requiring reporters to be escorted at all times.

The judge ordered the Pentagon to restore access for affected reporters, particularly those covering national security, emphasizing the importance of independent journalism in holding government accountable.

The Pentagon says it plans to appeal the decision, maintaining that the revised policy was designed to balance press access with security concerns.

The case stems from a legal challenge brought by The New York Times, with press freedom advocates praising the ruling as a strong defense of constitutional protections.

The decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over press access, transparency, and the role of the media in covering government operations.
