Trump's White House Ballroom Project Set to Use Foreign Steel Despite American Steel Push
President Donald Trump's $400 million White House ballroom project is reportedly set to receive a major donation of foreign steel, even as his administration pushes policies aimed at boosting American steelmakers.
According to the New York Times, a Luxembourg-based firm could supply steel worth tens of millions of dollars for the 90,000-square-foot expansion. The White House has not confirmed the specifics, citing the project's sensitive nature, though a spokesperson says the renovation is designed to improve the White House at no cost to taxpayers.
The ballroom project is funded largely by private donors, but its price tag has doubled since its initial estimate, now sitting at $400 million. The potential use of foreign-donated steel comes as the Trump administration has championed tariffs and other measures to protect the American steel industry.
