California Governor Race Shaken as Eric Swalwell Campaign Falters
California’s already crowded race for governor has been thrown into uncertainty following allegations against Congressman Eric Swalwell, which are now threatening to derail his campaign.
The accusations have led to former allies pulling their support and prominent Democrats calling on Swalwell to drop out of the race, dramatically shifting the political landscape.
With the field already packed with high-profile candidates, the sudden change has created a scramble among rivals hoping to gain momentum. Political analysts say the race is now essentially reset, with no clear frontrunner emerging.
Several Democrats are vying for position, including Katie Porter, Xavier Becerra, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Tom Steyer, but each faces challenges in securing a strong voter base. At the same time, Republicans Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco are also seen as competitive contenders in the primary.
The race operates under California’s “jungle primary” system, where all candidates compete on the same ballot and the top two finishers advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.
Strategists say Swalwell had carved out a unique lane in the race, particularly as a vocal opponent of President Donald Trump, but that support may now be up for grabs.
With ballots set to go out in May and key debates approaching, candidates are looking for opportunities to stand out in what has become a wide-open and unpredictable contest.
