Artemis II astronauts describe historic moon mission and intense return to Earth
Astronauts from NASA’s Artemis II mission are opening up about their historic journey around the moon—and the intense moments that came with returning home.
The four-person crew completed a 10-day mission, becoming the first humans to travel to the moon since the Apollo era. The mission also pushed them farther into space than any astronauts before, marking a major milestone for modern space exploration.
While the mission captured global attention, the return to Earth proved to be one of the most dramatic moments. Astronaut Victor Glover described a brief but powerful moment of free fall during reentry, comparing it to falling backward off a skyscraper for several seconds.
As the Orion capsule reentered Earth’s atmosphere at extreme speeds, it endured temperatures reaching nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The spacecraft’s heat shield—designed to absorb and dissipate that heat—showed signs of wear during the descent, though astronauts said the ride itself remained smooth.
Beyond the physical challenges, the mission also tested the crew mentally. Traveling more than 200,000 miles from Earth, astronauts described a heightened awareness and the emotional weight of seeing their home planet from such a distance.
Despite the challenges, the crew emphasized the strong bond they formed during the mission, describing their connection as deeper than friendship after spending days in close quarters under intense conditions.
The mission has already inspired millions around the world and is seen as a major step toward future goals, including returning humans to the moon and eventually establishing a long-term presence there.
Astronauts say they are ready to continue pushing boundaries, even as future missions may involve greater risks.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
