Trump weighs JD Vance’s role in Iran talks as Rubio emerges as potential rival
President Donald Trump is closely monitoring Vice President JD Vance’s performance as he takes on a leading role in negotiations aimed at ending the war with Iran.
According to sources familiar with internal discussions, Trump has been in frequent contact with Vance during the talks and has even asked advisers how they believe he compares to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race.
Vance, who previously expressed skepticism about entering the conflict, has now become a central figure in the administration’s diplomatic efforts. He has been involved in high-level discussions and is expected to return to negotiations if progress continues.
Despite Trump’s public support, he has also joked about the high stakes, saying he would credit himself if a deal succeeds but blame Vance if it fails.
The vice president has faced a delicate balancing act—defending administration policy while acknowledging that the war remains unpopular with some voters, particularly younger Americans.
At the same time, tensions have emerged on other fronts, including disagreements involving the pope and broader foreign policy messaging, highlighting the political challenges surrounding the negotiations.
While a temporary ceasefire has been reached, a long-term agreement remains uncertain. The outcome of these talks could have major implications not only for global stability but also for domestic politics as midterm elections approach.
For now, Vance remains at the center of both diplomatic efforts abroad and political scrutiny at home.
