Utah Community Rallies to Support 911 Dispatcher Battling Breast Cancer
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — For more than a decade, Melisa Garcia has served as the calm, guiding voice for residents in Utah facing their darkest moments. As a dispatch supervisor at the Valley Emergency Communications Center (VECC), she is the one law enforcement and the public rely on when crises arise. Now, the community she has served for 12 years is rallying to support her following a shocking stage three breast cancer diagnosis.

Garcia, who described herself as healthy and asymptomatic prior to a routine mammogram, is currently two-thirds of the way through chemotherapy. The diagnosis was a significant blow to the veteran dispatcher, but her colleagues at the VECC and local Utah law enforcement agencies made it clear over the weekend that she would not have to fight the battle alone.

A massive fundraiser was held in West Valley City to assist Garcia with her mounting medical costs. The event featured a car show, a silent auction, and a variety of food vendors, drawing a crowd of first responders, friends, and family members. Unified Police Sgt. Ed Twohill noted that supervisors like Garcia take exceptional care of the officers in the field, and the event was a way for the department to return that dedication.

One of the most moving moments of the fundraiser occurred when Garcia's brother, father, and several coworkers, including fellow VECC employee Benjamin Vaughan, stepped up to have their heads shaved. The gesture of solidarity brought Garcia to tears as she watched her loved ones and colleagues embrace the razor to mirror her own hair loss from treatment.

Despite her years of helping others navigate high-stress situations, Garcia admitted that being the center of attention and the recipient of such widespread help has been a major adjustment. She expressed deep gratitude for the strangers and colleagues alike who have stepped in to provide everything she has needed since the start of her treatment.

As she continues her journey toward recovery, Garcia remains focused on the future and the strength she has drawn from the community's response in Utah. She emphasized that the collective support from her work family and the public has made her feel more prepared to beat the disease, reinforcing the idea that the community is stronger when everyone stands together.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
