LAX Automated People Mover Enters Final Testing Phase with Empty Train Runs
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles International Airport has reached a significant milestone in its multi-billion dollar modernization effort as the new Automated People Mover trains have officially begun moving along the tracks. While the elevated electric trains are currently running without passengers, the sight of the cars in motion marks a visible shift for the long-delayed project.
The testing phase, which began in earnest this week, involves the trains running daily to simulate a real service schedule. The elevated system stretches 2.25 miles around the airport campus and features six dedicated stations. These stations are designed to provide a seamless connection between the airport terminals, parking facilities, the consolidated rental car center, and the wider Los Angeles Metro system.
According to LAX officials, the system must undergo a rigorous reliability period before any members of the public are allowed to board. Specifically, the trains are required to complete 30 consecutive days of service without any major technical problems or interruptions. If a significant issue occurs during this window, the testing clock typically resets to ensure the system meets the highest safety and performance standards.
The project has been a focal point of airport improvements since construction began in 2019. While the original target for opening was set for 2023, legal and construction disputes led to several years of delays. For now, the trains will continue to circulate empty as technicians monitor the computer-driven system’s responsiveness and timing.
An official date for the start of passenger service has not yet been announced, but the commencement of full-schedule testing is a key indicator that the project is nearing the finish line. Airport leaders hope to have the system fully operational to alleviate the notorious traffic congestion within the terminal loop in time for upcoming international events.
