Mall of Louisiana Shooting: 1 Dead, 5 Injured After Violent Food Court Shootout
A targeted argument between two groups of people escalated into a deadly shootout at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday afternoon, leaving one person dead and at least five others injured. Baton Rouge Police have confirmed that five individuals are currently in custody as investigators continue to comb through surveillance footage and ballistic evidence from the state’s largest shopping center.
The gunfire erupted inside the mall's food court, sending hundreds of shoppers fleeing for exits or barricading themselves inside dressing rooms and storage areas. Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. stated that the confrontation appeared to be a "very targeted disagreement" rather than a random act of violence. However, the Chief noted with regret that "some innocent people" in the vicinity were caught in the crossfire.
Of the five survivors, one victim remains in surgery while four others suffered minor injuries. Initial reports from the scene had placed the injury count as high as ten, but officials later revised those figures as the chaotic situation was stabilized. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined local law enforcement to assist in the response and investigation.
Witnesses described a scene of absolute terror. Signi Dreyer, a carousel operator at the mall, initially mistook the loud bangs for fireworks before seeing a gunman firing multiple rounds as people dropped to the ground. Dreyer remained on the floor until it was safe to move, eventually using cleaning rags to tend to the wounds of the injured until paramedics could reach the food court. Other shoppers reported hearing "extremely rapid firing" that lasted for nearly 30 seconds.
Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards addressed the tragedy, noting the difficulty of preventing such spontaneous acts of violence despite law enforcement presence and social programs. The shootout comes just days after another high-profile mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, further heightening regional concerns over public safety and gun violence.
While five suspects are already in custody, Chief Morse emphasized that the investigation is active and teams are still searching for additional individuals who may have been involved. Law enforcement utilized drones and helicopters to secure the perimeter and clear the surrounding parking lots. The mall remained on lockdown for several hours as police systematically evacuated shoppers and employees who had been sheltering in place.
