Destructive Tornado Hits Enid, Oklahoma: Dozens of Homes Leveled in Multi-Day Storm Outbreak
ENID, OK — A powerful and slow-moving tornado roared through north-central Oklahoma on Thursday evening, leaving a trail of destruction in the city of Enid and triggering a rare "tornado emergency"—the National Weather Service’s most urgent warning. The twister, which remained on the ground for more than 30 minutes, leveled homes and caused widespread infrastructure failure in what officials are calling the start of a dangerous multi-day severe weather outbreak.
Preliminary assessments from the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management indicate that approximately 40 to 80 homes were damaged or destroyed in Garfield County. The south side of Enid, particularly the Gray Ridge neighborhood, took a direct hit, with some structures reduced to piles of rubble and splintered wood. Enid Mayor David Mason confirmed Friday morning that while search-and-rescue teams had to pull several residents from collapsed buildings, there have been no confirmed fatalities to date. At least 10 people were treated for minor injuries.
Vance Air Force Base, located just south of Enid, also sustained damage during the storm. Base officials reported that while all personnel have been safely accounted for, the installation is closed until further notice due to ongoing power and water restoration efforts. "Base leadership is assessing the installation to ensure the safety and integrity of facilities and infrastructure," the base stated in a public update. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has been in contact with local leaders and urged residents to remain "weather aware" as recovery efforts begin.
The destruction in Enid is expected to be the first of at least five consecutive days of significant severe weather threats for the central United States. Meteorologists warn that the shift in weather patterns will keep the region on high alert through Monday. Friday's threat centers on northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, where large hail and damaging winds are the primary concerns. On Saturday, the risk shifts back toward the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metros, with the potential for hail larger than golf balls and additional tornadoes.
Sunday and Monday are forecast to be the most potent days of this stretch. Forecasters are monitoring the potential for discrete supercells that could produce "EF2 damage or greater." Because Monday’s intensity depends heavily on how much atmospheric energy is tapped on Sunday, residents across Kansas, Iowa, and Arkansas are urged to have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the weekend. Shelter locations have been established at the Oakwood Christian Church and the Chisholm Trail Expo Center for those displaced by the initial storms.
